Unfinished Sympathy

I don't know if you usually read my blog or not. But I'm fascinated with the phenomenon of faith; why and how we believe. I wanted to try something different. I reckon all too often we keep busy, we don't often strip back belief to the core. And some of the time we forget why we ever believed. But I'm interested. Why do you believe what you believe?

This blog isn't finished. That's because you're going to finish it. Please, if you've read this far, leave a comment below. It won't take you very long. Please don't leave this page until you've written, I'm interested in what you have to say.

What I want you to do is to start your comment with: "I am a Christian because" or "I am not a Christian because" and finish the sentence. If you don't know the answer please post that. Please don't attempt to respond or argue with any other comment, just write your own.

Please post your comment anonymously, it will be more fun. Be as honest as you can, no one will know who you are. At some point I'll write my own response. But I guess you won't really know which one is mine.

Please pass this on to as many people as possible. The more responses we get, the more interesting this could be.

I reckon by the time we're finished we'll have quite an interesting blog read....

  1. I am a Christian because it gives me a deep hope that this hopeless world can't offer me

  2. I am not a Christian because I don't see Christianity as a convincing or plausible explanation of the world around me.

  3. I am a Christian, not because it provides an explanation, or a belief system I can buy into, not because I am looking for a viable worldview or answers to any questions about the world out there.

I am a Christian because I know through experience that I need grace, I need God. I need forgiveness and I need a hope to give my life to. In other words, for some mysterious reason I know that God has loved me, and I'm thankful for that.

  4. I am a Christian because this world is not enough. There must be something more. And that something more is God, who has shown to me hope, faithfulness, and his son Jesus Christ. So I will follow him.

  5. I am a Christian because I am convinced that Jesus rose from the dead.

  6. I am a Christian because life lets you down, but God doesn't.

  7. I am a Christian because, to the best of my knowledge, turn out Jesus was pretty much right about what he said and did.

  8. I am a Christian because I have seen in my own life and in the life of others that Jesus transforms lives, for the better. He changes us into people who are MORE human, who try to love more, give more, hope more, who may still fail but who have experienced grace and love and try and share it with others.

The message of Jesus and the gospel when put into action is so powerful and beautiful, I can but try and follow Him.

  9. I am a Christian because grace is the only way I believe we can truly be free.

I have not come to this conclusion as a result of any sort of religious doctrine, but through experience. Grace means we always have a reason to be thankful, peaceful, joyful, it saves us from anger, guilt, confusion and separation in all relationships. When I see someone hurting, not physically, otherwise, I see a need for grace in their lives.

  10. I am a Christian because the more I look at the universe the more I see the hand of a creator guiding its course.

I can't see how inanimate atoms and matter can create out of randomness, consciousness, self awareness, and the ability to rationalise and reason. Ergo a personal being must've created the universe

  11. I am a Christian because I see Jesus bring hope to the hopeless. I have no reason not to be.

I found myself believing, and so far no one has given me a convincing reason why not.

  12. I am not a Christian because I have no reason to be.

God plays no part in my life. I am happy, and I make other people happy, and that's enough for me.

There is no point in believing in something without evidence. One may as well worship unicorns and poached eggs.

  13. Ironically, (relative to the last post) I am a Christian because its where the evidence leads me. This is not to say that there is an iron clad case for the existence of God or the divinity of Christ, rather, I find that the weight of the evidence suggests these things to be true which leads me to have to choose between accepting or rejecting Christ. I choose to follow.

  14. I am a Christian because I have known no greater love than the love of Jesus Christ - a love so graceful, healing, and inspiring that even in the of darkest times, I am free from fear and pain.

  15. I am a Christian because I believe God is there.
I can't claim to feel worded responses from God or a chatty, conversational nature to my relationship with him but I have no doubt that he's there in my life and in the world around me. I see him around on a daily basis but I don't always clock that it was him.

  16. I am a Christian because, despite stopping going to Church and trying my hardest to not believe, God never let me go.

  17. I am a Christian because I believe in the common betterment and development of man and the positive aspect that Christianity has played in my life.

  18. I am a Christian because of Jesus.

When I've felt angry or faithless or just apathetic, it's the person of Jesus who has drawn me back- his compelling life, his life-filled words, his dramatic and unjust death and, crucially, his world-altering resurrection

  19. I am a Christian because as crazy as it sounds, I believe that Christ died for me and then rose again!

In a world filled with so much uncertainty, that core truth just resonates with me. At times everything doesn't seem like it is necessarily adding up, yet when I look back I continually see how God's grace, love and guidance has altered and shaped my life.

  21. I am a Christian because, among other things, I know Jesus.

  22. I'm not a Christian because i'm not desperate for an answer to the unanswerable. I don't want the pity of faith to falsely claim that I have a purpose and that my actions have divine consequences.

  23. I am a Christian because, even at the darkest moments of my life and at a time when I feel completely lost, I can see the beginnings of God's plan for my future.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I am a Christian because God gave His one and only Son, Jesus Christ, to die for me.

  25. I am a Christian because it seems to be true.

Christianity is more coherent than any other worldview I've come across and there is strong historical evidence that it corresponds with reality. Coherence and correspondance- they're the best measure of truth I know.

Sometimes that's the only reason I'm a Christian.
